Oak trees are a keystone species. Simply meaning that they are trees that entire ecosystems depend on for survival and habitat. Oak acorns provide nearly 100 vertebrate species with food and shelter.
In Nebraska here are our our native oak species. There are two different groups of oaks the "red oak" group in which the acorns mature over two seasons & leaves that typically have pointed lobes. This includes the black oak, blackjack oak, and red oak. The other group is the "white oak" group. In this group the acorns mature in one season and leaves will typically have rounded lobes. In Nebraska this includes the bur oak, Chinkapin Oak, and white oak.

The temps are up and the turtles are out! You'd be one shell of a friend if you slow down for these reptiles that are on the move.
Turtles would appreciate your assistance as they traverse our roadways in search of mates and food. Here are some ways you can help turtles that you might spot on the road.
1. Drive slowly in areas where turtles frequent.
2. If you have to move a turtle be very careful when moving them (it could be injured or it could bite you depending on what species). If possible, sometimes it is best to just stand guard as the animal crosses the road on its own.
3. Always keep your own safety in mind – watch out for oncoming vehicles, signal properly when pulling over and recognize your surroundings first before working to help save an animal.
4. If the animal does need to be moved, put it down on the other side of the road in the same direction it was going.
5. Do NOT take it with you - please only focus on helping it get safely to the other side.

Prescribed burning is an important management tool in the landscape, but it should be used judiciously. Many of the large fires Kansas Forest Service have responded to in the last week have been a result of escaped prescribed burns.
Many serious fires have occurred when someone burned on a day with favorable weather, but a day or two later, an unseen ember was whipped to life when dry winds kicked up. In planning any prescribed burn, it is critically important to check weather not only for the day of the burn, but also for at least three days following the burn.
Monitor local weather patterns and check with local agencies to ensure your burn will not cause the next Kansas wildfire.
